10-week health challenge

TGIF! This was such a weird week and I had no idea what day it was for much of the week. Starting work on a Tuesday after a 4-day weekend was tough and I just couldn't seem to find my mojo! I'm sure that Monday will be better because things will feel back to normal.

Before I start talking about an upcoming challenge I'm participating in, I wanted to give you a quick update on Kali. She had her first postoperative check with the vet on Wednesday and the vet said things look great. She got her staples removed, her incision is healed, but she is still on activity restrictions for the next six weeks. We are continuing to take her outside on a leash and she is kenneled when we are gone. She is not allowed to jump, run, or play with the other dogs, and that's tough, but we've made it this far - we can do it!!

Here in Iowa we have a state-wide Live Healthy Iowa 10 Week Challenge that begins on Monday. The University of Iowa pays the registration fee for employees who sign up, so a group of us are going to participate as a team and we have a friendly competition going with another office team. The losing team buys the winning team lunch!

The object of the challenge is to log in as many activity minutes as possible. Exercise hasn't been an issue, but I wanted to give some serious thought about what I wanted these next 10 weeks to look like, considering all of the ups and downs I experienced last year.

Over the last several weeks, I've been taking a break from heavy lifting and have been doing low-impact dance cardio 4 days a week and 2 days of strength training and I'm really enjoying it, so I'd like to keep up a schedule of 3-4 days a week of low-impact cardio and two days a week of strength training. A few days a week I also want to add on some mobility work. I'm not doing anything intense and strenuous. I'm just focusing on being active and moving my body.

I've given even more serious thought about what I want my diet to look like. I decided for the next 10 weeks that I'm going to keep my meals as simple, healthy, and plant-based as possible with the occasional fish and meat. I also want to cut out processed foods as much as possible.

These 10 weeks will be an experiment for me. How will I feel if I stop worrying about how much protein and carbs I'm eating and instead just get back to basics: keep it simple, keep it healthy, and eat mainly plants. How will I feel? How will I sleep? How will my workouts feel?

I feel really excited and optimistic to start out 2024 this way!
