Daily diary - Tuesday 10/31/23

Happy Halloween! It is a horrible weather day for Halloween. It is cold with a very blustery wind. I actually saw a few snow flurries in the air! We usually set up a huge blow-up tunnel on the walkway going to our door and then sit at the end of the tunnel to give out candy to the trick-or-treaters, but it's too windy for the tunnel, and it's going to be really cold, so I'm not sure if we'll even sit outside. Bummer!!

We also got some horrible news from Haley this morning. Our 10-year-old grandpup, Maggie, is having difficulty breathing and getting around, so unfortunately, it's time to let her go. She'd been diagnosed last week with masses in her spleen and she was having some internal bleeding. They are going to see if they can get a vet appointment set up for tomorrow a.m. David and I are going to head there this afternoon to say goodbye. My heart is broken and I feel so sad for Haley and Dustin. Maggie has been a huge part of their family for so long. She is such a good girl.

It feels insensitive to write about other things going on in my day, but I promised myself that I would keep a daily diary.

I actually slept really well last night. I think because of that, and because I fueled well yesterday, my workout today went really well. After drinking a cup of coffee and eating a banana with peanut butter, I emptied the dishwasher and then drank my pre-workout supplement. I did a one-mile at-home walking workout to warm up and then I did week 5, day 2 of LIIFT4. Today we focused on back and biceps, and since it was a circuit day, we did two blocks of work consisting of three rounds of four exercises. I increased my weight for all but one of the moves, which I was really happy with.

After my workout, I had a protein smoothie made with unsweetened soy milk, chocolate protein powder, ground flax seed, spinach, and frozen berries.

For lunch I had an egg salad sandwich with some bell peppers. I watched an episode of Big Bang Theory while I ate and then I did a quick 10-minute walk-at-home workout from YouTube (I love Get Fit With Rick). Then it was an hour-long work zoom meeting.

David and I then headed to see Maggie. It was sad and painful to watch her struggling to get up to see me. You could tell she was excited to see me, but it was difficult for her to stand up and walk over to me. I gave her some snuggles and then she laid back down to rest. We all talked about our memories with Maggie - how she loved to go for walks and find the biggest sticks. How she LOVED socks and so one year for Christmas, David and I got her a large bag of men's socks and when we opened that bag and dumped all those socks on the floor, Maggie was just overcome with doggie joy and excitement. We remembered how she could hear me peel a banana from a room away and would come running for a bite. She's been with Haley through everything: college, dating Dustin, marriage, and the birth of Leia. Here are a few photos that I found last night:

Maggie at the shelter when Haley adopted her as a puppy.

Maggie with one of our late dogs, Lillie. They both had alpha personalities and didn't get along well, but this was a peaceful moment between them. They'll be reunited soon, and hopefully they won't fight too much. :-)

Haley and Dustin will be taking Maggie to the vet tomorrow to help her cross the rainbow bridge. It's going to be a tough day for them.

When we got home, we prepared for the trick-or-treaters. We weren't sure how the turnout would be, since it was very cold and windy, but we had a pretty nice turnout. The kids loved our decorations, and it was a couple hours of joy for me, as I love Halloween and I love seeing all the kids in their costumes.

Before the trick-or-treating started, I warmed up some leftover tuna noodles and had an apple on the side. I then couldn't resist a couple of pieces of Halloween candy.

Although I underate overall for the day, I ate healthy and I avoided wine, which I knew wouldn't take away my sadness. Instead I drank water and just tried to focus on happy memories of Maggie and the fun of Halloween night.

I was in bed by 9:00 p.m., but it took some time to fall asleep.
