I completed the third week of the Live Healthy Iowa 10-Week Challenge and just wanted to give an update on how things are going.
Here are the activity minutes I've logged over the last three weeks:
Week 1 - 212
Week 2 - 400
Week 3 - 330
My workout schedule in week 3 included the following:
Monday - 30 minutes of dance cardio in the morning, 15 minutes of at-home walking at lunch break, and 15 minutes of at-home walking after work
Tuesday - 15 minutes of at-home walking to warm up and then a 30-minute lower body strength training workout in the morning; 15 minutes of at-home walking at lunch
Wednesday - 15 minutes of at-home walking to warm up and then 30 minutes of dance cardio in the morning
Thursday - 15 minutes of at-home walking to warm up and then a 30-minute upper body strength training workout in the morning; 15 minutes of at-home walking at lunch
Friday - 15 minutes of at-home walking to warm up and then 30 minutes of dance cardio in the morning; 15 minutes of at-home walking at lunch
Saturday - On Saturdays I grocery shop and clean the house, so I took a rest day, since cleaning involves dusting, vacuuming, mopping, and sweeping, which I think counts as exercise, not to mention all of the trips up and down the stairs to the basement!
Sunday - 30 minutes of spin class and then a 15-minute at-home walking workout to cool down
Besides getting in activity minutes, I've been working on getting the following tasks done each morning:
Doing a 5-minute prayer/meditation
Reading 10 minutes from a personal development book
Drinking a glass of water while my coffee is brewing
My food choices have been pretty good, although work was hectic and I didn't always get an afternoon snack in and so by the time I got off work, I'd be starving. The last couple of weekends we've been eating out a lot. But we got to spend some time with both family and a good friend, so no regrets for me.
I've noticed a mindshift over the last couple of weeks, mainly with eating and not pushing myself too hard during workouts. I told someone yesterday that I like being able to eat whatever I want (in moderation). For me, it's become all about feeling healthy. I'll take being a bit fluffy but still feeling good and being able to eat the foods I enjoy rather than restricting and trying to have a thin body. I'm working out to maintain bone, muscle, and cardiovascular health rather than trying to get that amazing "after" photo and results after completing a program. I've stopped pushing myself too hard during workouts. I was just risking injury and honestly, when I asked myself what I was trying to prove, I had no answer.
Contentment has settled in and I'm truly loving it and I just hope that I can stay on this track because mentally, it's doing wonders. I'm also sleeping well and feeling energized throughout the day, so I must be doing something right.
I'd love to be able to do a weekly recap of what I'm eating, but I never remember to take photos or write down what I'm eating and if you're anything like me, you know that at age 57 it's hard to remember what I ate this morning, let alone what I ate all week! But I will do my best for a future post.
How are your 2024 goals going so far? I'd love to hear in the comments.
